The wise words

of Jim Dine

"Drawing is not an excercise. Excercise is sitting on a stationary bicycle and going nowhere. Drawing is being on a bicycle and taking a journey. For me to suceed in drawing, I must go fast and arrive somewhere. The quest is to keep the thing alive"

Whistle, listen and see what happens. On still days voice will emerge from the landscape. "Over here" it shouts. Towards the small patch of prickly shrubs you march. As you approach another noise will rise above the thorns of Kim Hill and those of the Matagouri bush.

"Hang on! Just wait for me to get my reading glasses".

The voice belongs to Susanna Izard. A large smile welcomes you into her studio between the prickles. Susanna was born and raised in Totora Valley. She specialises in landscape drawings and paintings.

Susanna can usually be found riding her 850 kilogram Clydesdale called Billy off into the vast mountains of the Mackenzie Country. Her work is raw, powerful and straight from one of the best studios in the world.

"It has been blowing like 40,000 bastards for months so I am driven to cowering in Matagourie bushes, sitting on the grass with the grass hoppers. When I stand up my head is nearly sheared off by the ferocious nor wester. Throwing gear into the car in a wind blown rage with out losing the afternoons work (and the car doors) is difficult".
